A boudoir shoot with the #beyourownsupermodel contest winner!

Believe in Beauty on June 9th, 2015

Back in April, we introduced the #beyourownsupermodel movement and contest. Our goal was to encourage positive self-image and spread the message of what we truly believe, that every women is their own supermodel! Made up or dressed down, sweaty after a gym session or glam-ed up for a night on the town, on the way to work or with kids in tow, we received TONS of different entries from women all over! It was exciting for us in the studio to see the message catch on.

The day of our in-studio event we sorted through over 1,500 entries between fb & instagram and selected one lucky lady at random to win a FREE two production shoot with hair and make-up AND a 5×7 album! @sciencestuffwithSteph was our winner!

Be Your Own Supermodel Event Recap

Behind The Scenes, Believe in Beauty, Current news and specials, The Boudoir Divas team on May 14th, 2015

Oh my word was our first #BeYourOwnSupermodel Event incredible! We had about 175 ladies who were ready to have a good time. We played trivia games, drank champagne, had a quite the talk about feeling good in your own skin, and many, many gals signed up for shoots with the awesome, very rare deal we had going.

A big thank you to Sondra of Seesondraslim.com for giving a quick chat about her personal growth learning to love herself. She had us on the verge of tears and definitely made us laugh.

I, Marissa, owner here, spoke a bit about the lessons I’ve learned photographing 100’s of women in their undies and how what I’ve gathered applies to being kind to yourself and giving yourself grace. I think the energy of all of us like minded women gathering together was a positive and lasting experience and I think we all left the event feeling as though we could all be a little more comfortable in our own skin. confidence quote women

We talked about how we can all have a harsh critic that lives in our hearts and minds, and that if we can learn to catch those negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones, a new truth and mantra, then that is one of the very biggest ways for self acceptance. We were all encouraged to write out what our personal new mantra was going to be.

We also handed out these cute little favors that we had printed out for our guests to hang as daily reminders about what we had learned. We wanted to share them with all of you that were unable to attend. We hope to see you at the next event!!!

BE YOUR OWN SUPERMODEL MOVEMENT & CONTEST

Believe in Beauty, Current news and specials on March 19th, 2015

supermodel

This new movement and contest we are launching is near and dear to all of our hearts, but as the founder of The Boudoir Divas Studio, and with this being my main motive for starting this business back in the day, I think I (Marissa) can say that I am especially thrilled to share what we are doing…

So let’s go back to the beginning of The Boudoir Divas’ mission, and I’ll share a bit about my state of mind back then – and how my outlook has since evolved tremendously.

Being a young 20-something girl I felt like I was never good enough, and I lacked confidence. There was always an issue with me physically (in MY mind), that kept me from having peace about my body or even who I was in general. It was a dark cloud of dissatisfaction with myself that constantly hovered around me. During these important years I had seasons in my life where this was a big issue, and seasons where it was just a nagging theme in the back of my mind. I simply never felt comfortable in my own skin regardless, or felt even remotely close to sexy. Which is what a young, healthy girl with the world at her fingertips should feel right?

The more I started to take portraits of women, the more I felt less isolated in my self-inflicted mindset. The women I photographed also wanted to look bright, shiny and fabulous – and just as sexy/beautiful as the models of the cover of all the magazines. Let’s see, we didn’t have Kim Kardashian back then, but we had Holly Madison, Britney Spears, and Beyonce, right? And in generations prior there was Bridget Bardot, Marilyn, etc. No matter what time in our culture, there have always been images of glamorous women, somehow setting the ‘standard of perfection’ in the minds of young women.

As I continued working with women and hearing their stories, I started to really think about this issue more and more. I journaled about it and really let these thoughts simmer. I wanted to understand what the reality of the situation really was – I mean, these idolized gorgeous bombshells were regular women, just like us. Maybe a little more talented in the entertainment world, but flesh and blood all the same. When the paparazzi caught them in their everyday lives, they often looked like you and me. No make-up, maybe wearing workout clothes even though they, or we, had no intention of working out that day. They seemed pretty “normal.”

This reality caused me to get a little jealous of the fact that they had the opportunity to dress up and get all glammed-up, and then have GORGEOUS pictures or videos of themselves looking so hot as to leave men drooling and women feeling envious. These weren’t just pretty photos. They were Bombshell legacy kind of images. These famous people get an experience with an end result (photos) that leaves me with a message like they’re saying “Hey I am supermodel gorgeous, deal with it. I have that item checked off in brain, so that when I am wearing my grungy sweats, I at least feel like hot stuff on the inside cuz…well… NAILED IT. See the pics to prove it.”

Okay, now I don’t think this is actually what models and actresses are thinking. But I started to imagine that maybe the gorgeous photo shoots they got to be a part of sort of helped to check off this little ‘insecurity box’ in the minds of these women. Moving “insecurity” lower on the brain tier of influential feelings and moving “confident” higher on this brain/emotion ladder. And that made me wonder what significant experience I could have in my life that would help move confidence up a little higher in my brain and heart. And the biggest question, do I love myself enough to take action on this? To invest in this experience even if I found it? And this is where the idea for the Boudoir Divas studio, vision, mission, and goal truly began to take a deeper form.

When I saw “The Holiday,” Arthur’s line confirmed it.

Arthur: “Iris, in the movies we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason, you’re behaving like you’re the best friend.”

Iris: “You’re so right. You’re supposed to be the leading lady of your own life, for God’s sake…”

leading lady confidence quote

That’s it! That’s it! This isn’t just about taking pretty pictures (I already knew I wanted to be a photographer); it’s about creating an experience that matters. Something that has significance in the lives of hundreds of women. An experience where we have the chance to take a step and to be the leading ladies of our own lives, our own stories.  In taking photos where we look and feel gorgeous so in the rest of our not-so-glamourous life, we can say “nailed it!” – and thus learn to feel good in our own skin. It’s not all just about taking sexy photos, but it’s an experience where we can let our guard down, and you see the beauty in the vulnerability of saying ‘here I am, and I am learning to love me.’

This is all about giving women a chance to be our own cheerleader, the leader of our catwalk, the heroine in our own personal story.  BE YOUR OWN SUPERMODEL when the rest of the world may try to drag us down. We get one life, let’s celebrate it.

not selfish to pour into your own cupIt’s not about looking ‘perfect’ or comparing ourselves to other women. It is about encouraging each other to feel comfortable in our own skin. This campaign is geared toward bring awareness to all women, to start a trend of grace and self acceptance. Women… Love yourself. Invest in yourself. Believe in yourself. Give yourself grace. Do not aim for perfection but for acceptance. Own your story, be the leading lady of your own life. Do something crazy and be your own damn supermodel!

Just the way you are <3

Believe in Beauty on January 20th, 2015

Hey ya’ll! Sarebear, here. :) I had the pleasure of meeting this next client, Sondra, when I photographed her just a couple weeks ago. She is a dear client of ours, but somehow we had not had a chance to interact yet. What first struck me about Sondra was her kindness. She has a kind of radiating softness glowing out of her that is so endearing. She is also outgoing, beautiful, and confident. She is unabashedly herself. We instantly clicked.
sondraboudoirdivas

Sondra writes her own blog that addresses her journey through weight loss and self-acceptance. It’s a theme that resonates strong with us here at the Boudoir Divas. We’re always trying to encourage our clients (and ourselves, as women) to embrace who we are in the moment. To see that there is beauty in all of us (which is impenetrable regardless of our appearance.) We try to help our clients focus on their assets (instead of perceived “flaws”) and to own, with confidence, the bodies their souls were born to. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the importance of perspective. What IF we put more energy towards growing our strengths, or loving our most favorite parts about ourselves, instead of wanting to ‘fix’ whatever is wrong? Why waste our precious time on anything other than enhancing our gifts. Embracing our best attributes. It’s all about where we put our attention…

That’s where we come in at the Divas. Because here is a place where you can come to be you. We help you feel confident in your skin and try to capture that essence on camera. Sure, you may be giving this as a gift to your husband or boyfriend, but it’s even-more-so a gift for yourself. It’s a breath of fresh air in the “do more, BE MORE” culture we live in. We like you just the way you are (shout out to my man Billy Joel for that one.)

Sondra has some really sweet things to say in relation to this on her blog:

You can view the rest of her blog and testimonial here

Thank you, Sondra, for your kind words and beautiful presence. And to all you other BEAUTIFUL women out there, we encourage you to Believe in (your own) Beauty! XOXO- The Boudoir Divas

Brande Roderick’s Boudoir Shoot for Believe in Beauty

Believe in Beauty, Boudoir Photo Shoots on March 4th, 2014

brande roderick

We were incredibly honored to be able to shoot Brande Roderick’s Supermodel session recently, as a part of our “Believe in Beauty” Campaign!

You may remember her from Bay Watch, as a world famous model,  or the show The Apprentice! I (Marissa) personally LOVE The Apprentice, and I was always routing for her, she was kind, fair, and outrageously sharp.

Recently we invited celebrities who always get the opportunity to get glammed up, to treat a special woman in their lives to a photo shoot at our studio. Together they would come in and take turns getting all dolled up and have their photos taken. Brande brought in her sister, and what a day we had!!! It gave her sis the opportunity to celebrate who she was with our supermodel experience and #believeinbeauty, HER beauty. Quite the treat for Brande to do this for her.

It was a marvelous day, and you can imagine how thrilled we were to photograph this super star!

See Yourself in a New Light

Believe in Beauty on January 7th, 2014

For years I’ve been photographing women in their underwear, with the goal of helping them to feel comfortable and confident with themselves, to create artful images of them, to promote seeing themselves “in a new light.”  At the Boudoir Divas, we Believe in Beauty and have started a campaign to promote healthy and positive regard for ourselves as women from the inside out.  “Believe in Beauty” is somewhat of a mantra we use to encourage women to celebrate ourselves just as we are.  And to BELIEVE in the unique beauty we individually posses.

But while we preach our belief in beauty, the truth is that we all have our insecurities, and although we help women to see their unique beauty on a day to day basis, sometimes we don’t feel so beautiful in our own skin.  We can be hard on ourselves, scrutinizing, and it takes courage to face.  As a proponent of helping others to see themselves truly, I felt compelled to make this video.  In it, I am vulnerable.  Stripped down.  Just me.  No re-touching.  It took guts for me to film this, and to be so honest and bare (no pun intended.) But if we’re going to promote believing in beauty, we do have to acknowledge that it isn’t just about believing in being beautiful with a full face of make-up and Photoshop.  The idea is to believe we are beautiful in our natural state, as God made us, regardless of how society tells us/shows us/pressures us to be.  If I can help some women to overcome the same type of thoughts I’m having, then it serves a purpose. #believeinbeauty

We would be honored if you would like to comment, although you have to actually be in the post (click on the blog post title) to comment.
PS. I should mention, cuz a few people were worried, that my health issue I mention isn’t serious, I just can’t get my thyroid right which equals zero metabolism ;(

These words speak ladies…

Believe in Beauty, Testimonials on December 4th, 2013

In an article done by the “Huffington Post” titled, “How I Learned to Love My Fat, Naked Body” (I think I would have given it an more positive title, but none the less) a woman talks about her journey in self acceptance…. read more below…

While packing for a recent shoot, I started playing dress up in my new lingerie from Hips & Curves. I couldn’t help but realize how much I love adorning my body with garments I used to fear. Frankly, I have always loved to be naked and lacked modesty at home, but never with a partner until my current one that is. The bigger I became, whether through having a son, trauma, etc., the thought of someone seeing my body, at what I used to consider “my worst” nearly brought me to tears.

Now I cannot imagine a life without cage bras (like the photos below taken tonight) corsets, negligees, or dare I say… bare. How did I get there, to a place of lingerie and self awareness heaven?

2013-12-02-Screenshot20131202at6.06.26PM.png
(Bra from Lane Bryant, Lace Robe from Hips & Curves, Underwear from Downtown LA)
Well, it just took a little strength to try on something.. again and again. Before I knew it, after what felt like ages I looked in the mirror and realized what a disservice I was doing not only to my body, but my self worth. A ton of tears were involved, but they were necessary in the process of mentally uncovering the years of shields I had covered my body in… my emotional armor.

Even as a model, I still have a belly, cellulite, stretch marks, and thanks to nursing a son- not the perkiest boobs. However, that doesn’t devalue me at all. I think if anything, it makes my body more interesting. Like my tattoos, they tell a story and I can tell you where I was or how I was feeling at that moment, similar to when I look at my body. “This scar is from when I had a C-section.” “These scars are from crashing my bike on the gravel after not wearing a helmet even after my mother warned me multiple times.” “My stretch marks are from puberty, and many years after,” etc.

Our bodies tell a story, and everyone’s journey is different, everybody is different, unique, and exquisite. The only problem is that not everyone one respects that or comprehends that we don’t have to all look like a cookie cutter or perfect picture of “health.” We have so many forces around us that try and influence us otherwise. Why be our own worst enemy? Even if you don’t have a partner to dress up (or take it off) for, do it for yourself. Our relationships with ourselves and our bodies are the most important ones we will ever have.

You are worthy of feeling:

SEXY
DESIRED
… AND BEAUTIFUL.

Yes… you.

Tess Munster is a plus-size model, make-up artist, blogger and activist. She writes a blog called The Plus Size Life.

We certainly couldn’t agree more Tess! Thank you for inspiring all women to forget the scale and love themselves!
